Direct Source Discourse Episode 7: How Preparation and Partnership Drive Success with Eric Schlagheck

In our latest episode of Direct Source Discourse, Lake Michigan Credit Union’s Eric Schlagheck joins Argyle’s John Hardesty to discuss leadership, technology and preparing for the future of mortgage operations.

Eric, director of mortgage processing and home equity lending at Lake Michigan, brings 30 years of industry experience. Reflecting on his journey, he shared how an unexpected start in 1997 turned into a lifelong career with roles spanning sales and operations. Today, he’s focused on mentoring the next generation of lending professionals.

“I’ve been fortunate to work in both sales and operations, which gives me a broader perspective on what it takes to make a mortgage happen,” Eric said. “Now, I can pass on that knowledge and guide others in the field.”

For example, Eric advises that proactive preparation is key during slower markets. By focusing on operational efficiency, investing in technology and forming strong partnerships, Lake Michigan has positioned itself to scale quickly the next time the market turns.

“Periods of slow business aren’t for resting,” Eric noted. “They’re opportunities to enhance efficiency, evaluate technology and position your team to succeed when the boom comes.”
