Welcome back to Direct-Source Discourse! In today’s episode, Agyle’s Rowdy Harris joins Mark Metcalf, Director of Operations at Society Mortgage, to explore the value of up-to-date tech and the critical importance of focusing on increasing little efficiencies during slower cycles.
Mark, like many mortgage aficionados, didn’t exactly plan to begin a career in mortgage. Coming from real estate and construction, he rapidly progressed in the industry. He has since held several leadership roles, including as a Branch Manager for Consumer Real Estate Finance Co.
“I used to live in Florida, where I worked as a realtor slash bartender,” said Mark. “Not long after the housing crash, a job as a loan officer assistant landed in my lap, and it just worked out. I worked my way up through loan officer, processor and underwriter to get where I am now.”
In his current role, Mark has successfully helped Society Mortgage progress from a non-delegated to a delegated lender. Throughout this change, he has gained valuable insight into what works to support the adoption of new technologies and processes. According to Mark, the key is to make sure users understand how the new system benefits them—not just the company’s bottom line.
Outside of work, Mark volunteers regularly. He supports his local community by helping maintain the extensive hiking trails of Portland, Maine, and volunteers at Habitat for Humanity to help construct affordable housing.
Mark provides a unique perspective after years of work not only in the mortgage industry but also in real estate and construction. His extensive leadership experience and thorough understanding of the mortgage lifecycle allow Mark to deliver critical advice mortgage professionals can use to build up their companies and communities.
